I entered a contest on Sunday call the South Beach photomarathon. It was held by a group calle FotoMission http://www.fotomission.org/. I had to take 4 pictures in 6 categories, or 24 pics. They had to be certain categories in a certain order. Check them out on Flickr. If you go all the way to the end you can see some asses. http://www.flickr.com/photos/hipk/

| Mooncup!!! |
[17 Jan 2008|08:33pm] |
A few months ago I FINALLY purchased a mooncup (menstrual cup). This is easily one of the smartest purchases of my life. I don't have to use stinky, messy pads and tampons anymore! Menstrual cups are reusable, which saves me money, the hassle of purchasing shit every month, and saves some beautiful trees. You just stick it in for up to 8 hours, then take it out, dump the blood, and stick it back in. Sorry if this was too graphic, I'm in love with the thing.
Check it out! http://www.mooncup.co.uk/

| worst bus ride ever |
[10 Jan 2008|09:14pm] |
We enjoy taking the bus, but once in a while you have one of those experiences that makes you want to give up on public transportation altogether. Besides just being late and infrequent, buses often have people on them who are extremely mentally unstable. We had an experience when we first moved to Miami where a guy was waiting for the bus and he kept asking everyone for a transfer. Between asking, he would vomit violently on the ground. Then, he would perk up again and ask around for a transfer. After a while he found an old piece of gum on the ground. He was like, "is this someone's gum?" and then he ate it.
After he got on the bus, Iris started crying and he imitated her the whole way home. She would go "waaa" and then he would get this falsetto voice and be like, "waa, waa, waa." That guy ended up being pretty funny I guess.
Yesterday when we were on the bus we had a more disturbing experience. We had a pretty long ride back home, and at one of the stops this guy gets on the bus. He was obviously drunk and couldn't pay the fare. Some lady paid for him, causing this Cuban guy to get angry. He was like (en Espanol), "that guy's going to be trouble, get him out of here, don't you DARE pay his fare," etc. etc. He ended up on the bus anyway, and the whole time he had his eye on me and Iris. It was a crowded bus, but at each stop he would force himself closer to us. Bit by bit, he was sitting in the seat in front of us. First thing, he peed all over the seat. Next, he reached his hands over and kept trying to touch Iris. I told him "No" in this really angry voice, but he kept reaching for her, repeating some other kid's name. We still had like 20 minutes to go. Luckily James was on the bus, too. I was able to hand her to James and keep between them. He stared at Iris, and me, the whole ride. James said something like, "this is our stop." The guy got off, but we waited until the next stop.
Most of all, it was sad, but this guy was completely invading our space. I can't remember the last time I was that disturbed or uncomfortable.

We finally went through with it. We've been talking about getting rid of the TV for years and last week we did. I even put the record player in its place so we're not tempted to get a replacement. We've been going out more, listening to more music, and wasting MUCH less time. I actually watched shows like "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Friends" just because they happened to be on. Never again.

| just another day at the beach |
[11 Nov 2007|08:45pm] |

I was just thinking about how nobody ever seems to post anymore, but I haven't written anything in over a month. This was a fun weekend. We went to a HUGE downtown book fair. It was mostly new stuff with deep discounts. Everything was sponsored by Target and branded with a big bullseye, but we had a fun time. Today we went to the beach. It was pretty, and windy, and the ocean was the perfect turquoise color. On the way home, Iris kept kicking James in the crotch and pulling his hair. He was getting really frustrated. When we got home, I took off her diaper and she was PACKED with sand. Her whole vagina and butt were completely filled. It poured out of her diaper. Whenever we are so angry at her that we're about to explode, we discover it was somehow our fault. It's good to be put in my place, especially if it absolves Iris.

Some quotables from the kids at my school:
We were doing a journal entry on how and why their names were chosen. One student who chose to read his entry said, "My name came from my mom's sperm donor."
In my coworker's class, she told her students to put their papers face down after they finished the test. A girl said, "Face down, ass up, that's the way I like to fuck."
Plenty more where these came from, middle schoolers are hilarious.

| first day of school |
[19 Aug 2007|07:00pm] |

Tomorrow is my first day TEACHING. My chest is constricted, and I may have a nervous breakdown. I don't think I've ever been this tense. I have 6 classes (one more than I'm supposed to have) and no roster. The administration keeps telling me it will be OK. It won't kill me, right?

| I think I love my neighborhood |
[11 Aug 2007|08:34am] |

I went to the park today, which is 2 blocks away, and I managed to run into some people. I think folks around here like the idea of community, because everyone is friendly, open, and engaging. Iris and I went swimming in the pool (at the park) which scared her because of all of the fountains and crazy high pressure valves in the kids' area. This place is very refreshing.

The gas stove and I are friends now. It boiled my pasta water in like 30 seconds, and the smell has gone away. Apparently you have to light 3 pilot lights (that's right, there's a fire in my oven 24/7) or the gas just leaks into the air. I'm not worrying about it anymore.
Now I just need to work on the air conditioning.

| Miami's nice |
[03 Aug 2007|06:58pm] |
I'm in Miami now, living near the beach. The water is beautiful here, turquoise and transparent. Iris seems to be taking it hard. She cries pretty frequently and needs at least 2 naps every day. I think she is overwhelmed. We love the area. We can walk to everything we need: the supermarket, a hardware store, food. And, I can take the bus to my new job, it is only 15 or so blocks away. I'll be teaching English to 7th and 8th graders. We have this gigantic old stove and we just got our gas turned on today. I'm completely paranoid that it's leaking. I'm on the brink of calling the emergency line but trying to calm myself. Great things about Miami: The Spanish language Beautiful water Walkability / moderately good public transport Amazing apartment with TWO bedrooms A real job Interesting city folk
Bad things: This horrible gas stove Our air conditioning is barely working Loneliness HEAT
We love visitors, by the way.

James finally heard, he was accepted into the Miller School of Medicine in Miami! I'm so happy to be able to start thinking about what we're doing next year. I was one week away from going to a Polk County schools job fair. I don't know what I'll do there, but at least our location is decided. I'm ready to plan.

| Moving On |
[12 Apr 2007|10:06pm] |
|
We have a NO to Miami and a NO to Michigan. What do you have to do to become a doctor in these parts? On the upside, we are free. We could go to NYC (my vote), San Francisco (James' vote) or any other place we deem worthy. I worry about being far away from friends and family but I am more than ready for a move. My Montessori school offered me a full-time job, which makes me feel appreciated, but I'm going to move away anyway. Then again, there are the wait lists...
